Mold
#1
I am sure that this has been a topic in the past, (I did go through several pages looking for it)

Is there anything to be done about the mold?

I have tried hydrogen peroxide, the 2nd time I tried cinnamon extract in hot water, but it's back. For personal and financial reasons we want to stay as green as possible, but I do not relish the idea of demolding (our old wooden bookcases are serving as selves)our pantry every 5 weeks.

Any suggestions?

I've had good luck with white vinegar. My neighbor swears by a 10% bleach solution but I can't stand the smell so don't use it.

too soon old, too late smart
I don't know how I got over the hill without getting to the top.

once mold is in wood, it's really hard to suppress it.

Suggestion -- get rid of the old bookcases.

For wood that can be painted:
Bleach the wood. If painted, strip it, then bleach it.
Prime it.
Paint with mildew-inhibiting paint.
Pray.

I've tried lysol, mildew blocker, etc., but chlorine bleach is the only thing that really does it. And if the mold has roots under the paint, bleach won't kill it -- it will keep coming back, thus you have to strip off all old paint.

Also run a dehumidifier.

Has anyone tried Concrobium? I have heard about it, but no first hand info....
I have used lemon oil on wood, knocks out the mold, but it does come back eventually.
To reduce mold inside drawers & cabinets & storage boxes, use Kitty litter (esp the crystal kind) as an inexpensive dessicant.)

This is a topic I know well living up here in Mountain View. Fine white powedery mold grows everywhere, inside cabinets, under kitchen table, basically any thing wood. I am in the same thought pattern as you regarding chemicals. I buy all my cleaning stuff from the health food store. One very late night I stumbled upon a "Mold Remediation" website, and started reading, and found a chemical listed on a bunch of different sites called, "Sporicidin". It has been deemed "Very low toxicity by the EPA. The main use is in hospitals, to clean an disinfect, blood etc, (It breaks down the proteins. I went to the company's site, and unfortunately they don't have distributors in Hawaii, but do in California. If you order from the company you have to buy a whole case, which is pricey, but if you contact a distributor you can probably buy whatever amount you want. I bought their wipes( they're soaked in the solution) and super easy to use. I did all my cabinets, table, chairs. This was 2 months ago and so far no reappearance of mold. Angela
