I am trying to coordinate a small get together and looking for something in the area that might have some picnic tables / pavilion and access to a forest trail for some walking or light hiking.
The ideal match is Kalopa State Park, but that is too far a trek for many. Any thoughts on something similar but more local?
Thanks!
Ironyak, good morning. Kalopa park is very nice this time of year for what you mentioned. Yes the drive is a bit far but it can be worth it. We enjoy driving up past volcano to maunaloa road, they have a very nice and clean park in there called bird park. Hiking trails, plenty of beautiful birds, no mosquitoes, pavilions, benches, and bathrooms. The drive is not as long and there is a few other nearby things to do like golf and even a winery close. Whateva you decide and wheneva, please count me in.

besides Kolopa (best on island) and overlook at Waipio (crowded).... slightly closer ones off top of head... Laupahoehoe Park, Hakalau Bay, Kolekole Park, Honoli'i Beach Park, Coconut Island Hilo, Waiakea Ponds Hilo, '4 mile' Hilo, HVNP (many spots), Hot Pond in Lower Puna (Ahalanui), Pohoiki Bay, 'Niu Beach' Kalapana, and a bit far but usually better weather when it rains in Puna... Punalu'u and Wittington Beach in Ka'u

the only prob NOW about that picnic area next to Kipuka Puaulu 'Bird Park' off Mauna Loa Strip Rd.... is you have to have a valid receipt that you paid your $10 at Park Entrance to use this NEW picnic facility... thats on the previously 'free' side of the hwy....
