Pete Hoffman Runs For Mayor

I would be interested in knowing if Hoffman is in favor of wasting the county's time by enacting over-reaching GMO legislation and then wasting our money defending it first in district court and then on appeal. I know he wasn't in office when it passed, but Kenoi signed it, and I'd like to know any prospective mayor's position.

Agreed, Chunkster. Also applies to education/schools, geothermal, Mauna Kea management (sorry, but not really...lol), permitting process for land proposing any development (his past sole vote on principle may stand), and several other pressing issues.

For example, what about Civil Defense and planning for Puna (ie. alternate roadways, lava zones, development planned prior to the last lava flow, police department efforts in Puna, "squatters rights" (if they exist), will anything change or be improved upon?

Also am interested in his position on NextEra/HEI proposal. BTW, the PUC will be holding meeting in Hilo in a few days (reference other thread).

In general, Mr. Hoffman would be a step up from the current administration in my book. He has credentials, and more important, his demeanor and control, in handling stressful situations has been quite impressive (only seen with my own eyes, not read in the propaganda spewed by media).

Although, he didn't show up for the UH Board of Regents meeting re: TMT at the UH. This is his island, where was he? (rhetoric) Mixed bag, of sorts.

Think we need a thread for "Mayoral Candidates" as a whole at this point.

JMO.

Here is the reason to not vote for him. Those guys are crazy, gameday with two full games. Kind of like watching Cocoon.

An interesting thread to revisit.

Proposed Impact Fees

Posted - 10/14/2010 : 10:54:30 By mikewj

"On Big Island Video 10-13-10, Pete Hoffman's plan to levy impact fees for new construction will be coming up at the next Council meeting on 10-19-10.
Briefly, he is proposing an impact fee of more than $6,000 per single family structure, with comparable fees for multi-unit residential, commercial and hotel construction. (Bill 304)

Also doubling the cost of use fees from $250 to $500 (Bill 306).
With the construction industry in the doldrums, he proposes increasing the cost of building! Someone needs to ask Mr. Hoffman what logic is behind this proposal? "

If you like paying an extra $6,000 to the County for the privilege of building a house on your $5,000 dirt road lot then Pete is the guy for you!

That was ten years ago. Impact fees have been used across the country to pay for infrastructure. Most everyone want infrastructure, no one here wants to pay for it. I wouldn't worry about it. I will give Pete credit for being about the only person willing to discuss a solution.
Assume the best and ask questions.

Impact fees are supposed to be paid at subdivision. After the fact fees would be entirely paid by substandard subdivisions that would never receive a dime of infrastructure.

Impact fees are supposed to be paid at subdivision.

Current (ignored) rules require infrastructure to be built prior to final subdivision approval.

As this didn't happen, I would fully expect an "impact fee" to disappear into someone's pocket, perhaps used to build a nice little park in Hilo. Nice idea, though, and better than the annual "construction bond", so perhaps it would be an improvement after all...

"That was ten years ago." ???

2010 to 2015 = 10 years: is that new math or an Einstein time warp and speed of light theory? E = m $2.

Just a slip. Though it may well have been talked about that long. Sure seems like ten years ago.
