Why no Big Box Full service restaurants in Hilo?
Dunno, could be that the chains here like outback, IHOP, Denny's etc...etc... have just gone down hill, or it could be.......

We are older and diets change as we age. We can't eat that crap and don't enjoy it.

---OR--- Living here and eating local ... Our taste and diets have changed that it just looks and now taste like crap. Dunno, I went to the my old time favorite denny's, I use to go to on Oahu (when I was much younger) ... Pearlridge one. Damn... It was really BAD! Was a few years ago. Now, I'll never go to another Denny's.

Went to outback a few months back, but after the costco run we were so hungry, we had the combo pizza (10 bucks) ... If they just brought over the food court from costco to Hilo, I'd be happy! haha anyway........ We weren't all that hungry even after walking around kona ... So, we just had the Ahi platter and some beers. Was good! Didn't actually try a steak. Was too full. But after reading all these bad reviews, maybe...glad I didn't eat a 50 dollar steak.

Ah well! If you are ever in Oregon. Drop by ringside for a good steak!

To Answer SWR. I never said I had factual evidence. I do have powers of observation though.
I'm sure there are people that support local businesses with their wallet. I do.
I shop at KTA, HPM for things when the price is comparable. And a lot of times the Quality is better. Especially the Poke at KTA. They use fresh fish. Not fresh frozen like the others do.
I'm in the trades and the majority of the customers I have buy most of their Home improvement items from Home Depot First and only go somewhere else if they can't find what they're looking for there.
One Thing I can always be sure of is that things will never go as expected.

We butcher our own protein.Be it rabbit, rooster or wild hog.
When we do go out to eat,Don's Grill is a favorite or a quick snack at Itsu's Fishing supply , especially for the grand kids .Ice Shave at Itsu's is the best.No big box chain even comes close to the local flair of Ice shave .
IHOP tends to be tedious but the wait help is always local - we tip 30 % or more as the wait help is not even at living wage or kept at 19 hours a week so they can not get any benefits.
We never eat at the chain fast foods as it is heart attack food .
To LavaLava - it is not us or them dear punawebber person,we are all on the same island and same small town in the middle of this deep big blue pond.
We have our own perspectives having been on this island over 9 decades .
One day this island will have a half million or more in population, and then every chain will populate the discerning palate of the wallets and choices we all make when it comes to personal choices in personal nutritional intake .
What we miss most and can not find locally is a GREAT baked Russet Idaho potato with real local butter and green onions or chives that are fresh for under 5 dollars USD . Dennys used to have but we are not in Kona and we will not drive 250 miles round trip for a baked potato and not a microwaved potato .
Where in Hilo or Puna can a person get a medium sized soft skin baked potato with the above mentioned add on's ? Any one know ?

But that does not mean those people you see and know are the same people who say they don't like the big box chain restaurants. You just invented that out of very thin air and posted it as a fact. Didn't even modify it with a "maybe" or "probably" or even an "I would guess." You just posted it as an indisputable fact.

I can't stand chain food, partly because I was in the food industry for a long while and I know what happens behind those kitchen doors, and partly because of family food allergies that require we be able to trust the kitchen to be knowledgable and honest about ingredients. I think the last time I was in either Walmart or Home Depot was at least 2 years ago, so your blanket statement that people who don't like chain restaurants and want to support local ones, must be going to those big box stores every time we go to town really rubbed me the wrong way.

Please try to not state opinion as fact when talking about what other people do in their lives, especially since you do not know most of us in real life.

Good luck with that

Yeah Ok I was speaking loosely. I also tend to exaggerate.
Nobody on PW states falsely their own opinions as facts. Ahemmm. Yeah right.

IMO probably that's what I meant.
Happy now?

Would be great to have more local restaurants and different varieties of food.

Beware chain restaurants and big box stores...they become fruitful, and multiply. Reporting to you live from inundated Southern California.

The problem with local restaurants is that they all taste the same, look the same, and have the same menus. To me local Hawaiian food means, whatever plate lunch you can serve up at $5.00 (or $6.00 or $8.00 depending on number of entrees)... Entree, two scoops rice, 1 scoop mac salad, rinse and repeat. I don't think any chain restaurants are going to compete or "take away" from these businesses.

Of course there are options, but if I want Thai food, Sombat's in Hilo reminds me a lot of Ning's in Pahoa, Spoonful in Keaau, and Thai Thai in Volcano. Sure, I can argue that the spring rolls are better at Nings and that the summer rolls are better at Sombats, but a sometimes a guy wants a freakin' steakhouse.

Locally owned restaurants don't have to mean "local food" per se. Alternatives to plate lunch, Japanese or Thai that are locally owned and operated using locally sourced fresh ingredients would be great, including a locally owned steakhouse. In between the Irish Pub and Hilo Burger Joint incarnations there was a great place called Jay's with great menus based on what is grown, hunted, caught and raised here. There is currently a business called Aloha Mondays offering weekly menus of locally sourced meals to go. We have a lot of culinary talent that drives to Waimea, Kona and Kohala to work, some of that talent is trying to get a foothold with small restaurants, but if the big boxes move in they won't stand a chance against those national advertising budgets.

Not a steakhouse, but in spite of the dive sports bar atmosphere I have had some excellent classic steak dinners at Cronies in Hilo.
