It's a very sweet deal, who wouldn't want to have a vacation home on the ocean for less than $200 a year? Who wrote those rules?

His Dad passing has nothing to do with his illegal activities or does it? If you can't figure out if you are living legally or illegally you shouldn't take any political appointment.

It's a no brainer, a decent person wants to know the stipulations of getting a practically free second home. This is exactly the same as Tiffany, it's a blatant SCAM, he should be prosecuted if she is being prosecuted.

Good ole boy club isn't a free ticket out of his mess. You take advantage of the people (the rest of us pay real taxes) you pay the consequences.

HiloPuna you think it's ok to take advantage, what does that say about your ethics? And are you saying if someone dies in your family that it's ok to SCAM?

Everyone who bought property here signed up for exactly this, right?

Don't bother complaining, that's just how things are, should have done your due diligence before moving here, etc.

Only descendents of people affected by the ML flow that destroyed the village can have those leases

Remind me again, when the 2014 Kilauea Lava Flow was headed toward Pahoa and possibly beyond, did the County announce:

1) Only descendents of people affected by the Kilauea Lava Flow which may destroy Pahoa village can apply for sweet deal leases in perpetuity

or

2) You built your house in a lava zone. You should have known this might happen. Take personal responsibility for your situation. Good luck collecting your insurance.

I wouldn't spend too much time trying to bring out the "truth" for commentators like Punatic007. Their worldview* and accompanying hyperbole doesn't accommodate nuance or allow for the complexities of life. Notice that in the last paragraph of P007's response to me they make an assertion about me based on their own conjecture ("...it's okay to take an advantage...") and then use it to impugn my integrity ("..your ethics...scam...").

BTW: HOTPE, with you I never know if it's meant to be sardonic. You do know that it was a very small and extremely remote village, kuuleana titles for the most part, surrounded by state lands and no other use for the property given its lack of access and resources.

*Better to assume the worst and never question your own biases

I have never seen a DLNR lease of the type he signed but I would absolutely assume the stipulation that the property be the signee's primary residence is a main/primary stipulation and is prominently featured in the document, not 'fine print' he never noticed.
