Got a friend who will be having a series of major medical procedures on Oahu at the Kaiser Moanalua facility. He will be there for 2-4 weeks and his boyfriend, who has never been to Oahu, will be staying over there on and off for much of that time. Does anyone know where there is an affordable place to stay near there with good access to public transportation? Plane tickets are going to be expensive enough, plus pet sitter and time off work, so they were hoping to avoid a rent a car and find a cheap place he could sleep and shower during a stressful time.
All help is welcome.

Moanalua is about 10 minutes drive from the airport.
Pick an airport motel within walking distance (or a motel with airport shuttle) of the airport shuttle loading area (outside near baggage claim B), then take the Kaiser shuttle--it runs from the airport to Moanalua (and back) about once an hour from 8am to 5pm. There are schedules in the Moanalua lobby, and online at

I don't have a Honolulu-specific example but every hospital I've encountered has paid social workers that already have this information at their fingertips including access to substantial discounts. When my daughter was medevaced to Seattle, Children's Hospital hooked me up with a nearby hotel that had a free shuttle and also the first night at hotel was free and subsequent nights were at a discount.
ETA: Again, not sure your friend's specific hospital but many of them have expanded facilities for family members and loved ones including (free) showers and group therapy. There is a hospital dept that deals specifically with this (I forget what its called... social services?) You can find out more once you call and ask. I was amazed at how much a few hospitals we've been to actually offered. One hospital even had free massages (courtesy of a nearby massage school) a few times per week for family members dealing with these stressful situations. Never used it myself but looking back I wish I did.
Good luck and sorry you and yours are going through this.

Last time on Oahu, I used a Hostel in Waikiki
It was very cheap, 27.00 a night/ buy 6, get the night 7th free.
They had lockers where you could store your valuables.
Each room had a kitchenette and had pots/pans and a coffeepot.
There is even a small grocery store nearby.
Not sure if you could find cheaper, it worked well for me.
There is also public transportation that runs right by the place and the folks at the front desk have printed schedules

I've stayed at the Royal Grove in Waikiki. Old hotel, but clean and safe with friendly staff and some character.
You can get the bus right up the block from there and it was cheaper than any of the downtown or airport area hotels I found.
The cheapest rooms are on the bottom floor and have no AC - cheap but IMO not the best choice. I like the back wing rooms past the pool for a few bucks more. Those do have AC and a kitchenette where you can cook your own food. higher up (3rd floor) will be a little quieter. They do book up so I recommend reservations asap. Best of luck to your friends.

Strongly advise against the Waikiki hostels, unless you don't plan to sleep. People come in until 3 AM and talk loudly, and then the garbage trucks come by starting at 5. There is one in Manoa that's much more pleasant, but like Waikiki it's a pretty good distance from Moanalua.

I will pass all these suggestions on to my friends, I had forgotten about the Royal Grove, but the ohana feel to the place might be welcome for someone dealing with a lot of stress. I've always had good experiences there, even ended up playing Texas Hold'em with the aunties in the lobby one night, those ladies took me to the cleaners.
