This outdated article shares two different opinions about this gambling issue here in hawaii. It would be great to hear others opinions or views to why it would help or hurt our local communities.
http://archives.starbulletin.com/2002/11...ecial.html Why don't they just let the residents of hawaii vote on these gambling issues, maybe they don't trust tax-paying adults?. The many different types of gaming ideas, or the thousands of local jobs by the building and operating of these various gambling establishments sounds good to many of us. Especially honest tax-taking jobs, that most here are already educated enough to work. It should be a priority, unless the intention is to keep many residents needing of some kind of state, take, or government assistance, jmo. Would crime really go up in areas that where to possibly receive these gambling establishments? Seems to me that if more locals were working honest jobs and making an honest wage, that This could equal less crime in that area as well. Also it may bring more tourism to these types of gaming established areas which in turn could fill restaurants, B&B's, vacation rentals, farmers markets, stores, ect, in turn creating even more local jobs. Ideas like, Residents in the different gaming counties receiving monthly checks from these gambling establishments, or educational funds for the area keiki, could produce local Winners not gamblers. Jmo.

Educational funds, like the TMT would contribute to our keiki? Have you checked into any ancient Hawaiian kapu against gambling? "How we spend our days is, of course, how we spend our lives." -Annie Dillard

I have yet to see in the US anywhere that legalized gambling brought the positive results that the original arguments made the case for. Much less any that outweighed the negative impacts where gambling was allowed to take root. Cripple Creek, CO is a perfect example.
Not to mention, do you really trust the legislature (or ANY government entity) to handle hundreds of millions of additional dollars on your behalf? And...just how much more of your tax dollars are you willing to part with to cover tickets home and other expenses for those who lost it all while trying to hit it big here? It's not like you can give them a $129 bus ticket back home. _________________________________________ Don't speak unless you can improve on the silence.

Hawaii residents who do their legal gambling in Vegas
Exactly -- why would the airlines want to give up all that revenue?

Some really valid opinions regarding Hawaii's gambling issues being made here, mahalo.
Kalakoa, you brought up a good point yourself. An Aviation question here. How much do you think the airlines would stand to lose? Also Couldn't those lost flights to Vegas and back, that cost us residents thousands a trip. Be made up with the additional tourist filled flights, from around the world to gamble in hawaii? Hotpe, Gambling in hawaii has a rich history dating back to the Hawaiian kingdom days. I also don't believe Asian folks are against gambling, I have seen many asian high and low rollers in places like vegas, jmo.

The airlines wouldn't LOSE any money at all. The entire tourist industry would benefit, including the airlines.

I feel the divide is nothing more than local enterprise versus International enterprise with existing resorts remodeling to casinos, and additional resorts built casino style as an "all inclusive resort", Can you imagine a Waikoloa with a casino? (No shudder imoji)
