cell reception in puna :)
#21
FYI Carolann,

I've been here about six weeks now and have Verizon (I won't make any changes till hubby gets over from Colorado). Signal is sporadic and coverage very spotty in many places. No service at all at my apt at the end of Paradise. Many dropped calls when I do get on. Pretty frustrating actually.

When we first got our phones and took a trip here (about three summers ago) we had coverage everywhere on the island; not sure why it would deteriorate- different phones perhaps?

We're in Hilo and recently just switched from T-mobile to Cingular and wish we never switched. The T-mobile coverage was much better. Now we have numerous dropped calls and spend half of my conversations saying "can you hear me now?". The reason we were unhappy with T-mobile had nothing to do with the coverage. Those problems were annoying, but don't compare to bad coverage. We're now stuck in a two year contract with Cingular. Can you hear me now?

It's always good to get suggestions from others but the real test is in your house and using your phone.

Most companies will give you a 2 week grace period to try the service out in your area with whatever phone you are using to make sure your coverage is good. If it doesn't work out they will cancel the contract and you pay only the prorated monthly charge for the time you used the service. If you get a new phone just don't load it up with info until you are sure you will keep it.

Good luck and Aloha,

Aloha all !!!
Wanted to bring this thread forward to see if any changes. We get no coverage @ the home we just bought @ the 18 mile marker on Pahoa Kalapana rd. We have Cingular and our phones bars drop to none about the 15 mile marker (heading towards Kalapana)
Any luck with other carriers in this area?

Looking at changing phones from Verizon to AT&T (old Cingular-right?) and wondered what folks think a year after the last post here.

Thanks,

Bill

Just back from a road trip around the entire BI and NEVER had a problem with reception on my cell - I have ATT/Cingular and use a Palm Treo 650. Mr. Tori's Nokia whatever did just fine as well.

According to the ATT/Cingular coverage maps vs everyone else, they kinda kick butt in HI.

No, I don't work for ATT/Cingular - LOL

Verizon Wireless announced Thursday it has expanded phone coverage on the Big Island with a new cell site.

The company said the new site increases service in the Puna area, including Hawaiian Paradise Park and Orchidlands Estates.
