PISCES High Tech for Big Island Funding Cut
#1
For those of you who don't know who PISCES is they run a state sponsored science program that has been very successful in training UH kids to program and robotics. They built a rover that runs remotely for training NASA and other agencies here in Hawaii and they've developed their own structural concrete using materials found locally (much like what needs to be done to build on the moon and Mars).

You can see their programs and work here: http://www.pacificspacecenter.com/

They've helped many kids become high earning grads by helping them build pioneering technology. They have STEM programs specifically for girls as well as a variety of paid internships.

Unfortunately their funding might be completely cut. They are asking anyone who has had experiences with PISCES or supports their work to write a letter expressing your support.

The letter has to be addressed to:
Rep. Sylvia Luke, Chair House Finance Committee
Sen. Jill Tokuda, Chair Senate Ways and Means Committee

You can write the letter as an individual, as an organization, a team or a club. If you could forward this request to others whom you think would be able to provide their support we would greatly appreciate it. Unfortunately time is off the essence. We need to collect these letters by this Sunday (April 2nd).

If you can, please send your letters in a pdf format with the following

Name
Organization
Experience/Relationship with PISCES
Narrative
Contact information
Signature.

You can email your letters to the following:
(Subject: Letter of Support for PISCES Funding- Outreach)

Polly Roth – proth@hawaii.edu

We will collect them all and take them to the legislators next week.

Maybe the TMT can chip in to keep it going? Or the money they are already paying to local organizations can be channeled to this?

Given the current situation, I'm not sure the TMT will be willing to provide even more money here. As for the local organizations that receive TMT money, you could ask the Office of Hawaiian Affairs to see if they are willing to support PISCES and channel some of that money there.
