Moringa, Curry Leaf, Coconuts, Hawaiian Salt
#1
I received an email today (below) with a list of specialty products people are looking to buy. If you're a farmer looking to expand your customer base, you might consider growing some of the items listed below. They're a niche market to be sure, but so was heart of palm and watercress until recent years.

Hawaii farmers, ranchers and producers,

EVERYDAY The HDOA receives requests that start with “Where can I find….” Or “Who can I contact…..” – and in the past couple of days, the end of the question has been:

Moringa
Curry Leaf
Coconuts
Hawaiian Salt
Cacao

We have referred the buyer/inquiry to the Hawaii Agriculture & Food Products Database https://hawaiiagrproducts.hawaii.gov/s/ where there are ZERO registered products except for curry leaf, where there is one registered supplier. Time to register as a vendor and register your products? Refer to the attached for guidance and a tutorial to help with registration. Call Anissa 973-9595 or email her at Anissa.Estrella@hawaii.gov for assistance.

Neat. How does one get on this email list?

I receive them through HFNA but you could try and contact Sharon who oversees the email list. There are on average about 1-5 food and flower industry related messages a day:

If anyone is interested in Moringa cuttings, we have a few trees at our property that can always use trimming (& they do propagate from cuttings & seed)

More products requested from suppliers, same contact as in OP above:

Lemongrass
Fruit puree (lilikoi, guava, mango)
Fruit flavorings/botanicals
Cacao
Ginger
Dried fruit
Avocados

There was 1 supplier for lemongrass, 8 suppliers for fruit puree, ZERO results for flavorings/botanicals, 1 result for cacao, 4 results for ginger, ZERO for “dried” and 2 suppliers for avocados

Perhaps this is one reason the state is offering grants to specialty vegetable and fruit producers.

Hey Carey. I have been attempting to propagate moringa for a few years now but I can't seem to get it really thriving. Any growing tips?
