End of the Road - Kalapana
#1
I'm confused. At the southernmost point of Hwy 130, or where Hwy 132 deadends, sits a small Hawaiian information booth with a parking lot. The guy there gave me a sample of noni in a paper cup (BTW it tastes like sand to me).
I did see a driveway-looking one lane trail that must go into Royal Gardens - it was north of this establishment.
Is this where you guys are driving to see what is flowing right now? Who owns the property where this trail was dozed (I know originally the entrance to Royal Gardens had to be from Hwy 130 which joined the Chain of Craters Rd)? An older map I have mentions Kaimu - is that a village or subdivision name? I am curious about the whole coastal area, but I'm always afraid of trespassing - like there's some oceanfront houses next to Isaac Hale Park, so I don't want to traipse across their lawn to beachcomb.

Sounds like your talking about Uncle Robert Keliihoomalu's property.

And that noni was probably Awa [^]

It sounds like you were in Kaimu there (with Verna's). The road that terminates near to Royal Gardens is from the blockade in Kalapana, on the flow crossing, not in Kaimu.
Both villages were influenced by flows, Kaimu in the 50's (taking out the Kaimu Black Sand beach).
Issac Hale has ocean front, and you can walk on the exposed (not on any plant growth) areas of the shoreline from Issac Hale.

The civil defense message today stated that the access was still closed, but that the county is working on opening a SAFE access by the weekend. They are still requesting that no one go, and to allow them to open up this area for public veiwing. It makes sense not to interrupt the workers... so give them aloha & let them do their thing! Hopefully everyone will benefit for this this weekend!
