Hawaiian Airlines Cutting Big Island Flights
#1
http://bigislandnow.com/2018/06/11/hawai...1528763461

"Starting next month, we are eliminating one evening round-trip flight per day (out of 15) to and from Hilo and one evening and one morning round-trip per day (out of 23) to and from Kona."

Next week or two, probably even more cutbacks.

Sigh, it's starting to happen!

no operational issues with their flights are being caused by the eruptions on K#299;lauea --- yeah..... Right!!!!

80% of the state's papaya production gone. Huge % of flowers as well. No guessing how many other air cargo crops no longer need to be flown out of here. A lot of those flights that had a lot of empty passenger seats were still "full" as far as weight (and dimensional weight) cargo was concerned.

More than tourism at play.

That's OK, we can just fly one of the other airlines.

Hawaiian cargo did carry some papaya & flowers but most went:

Papaya: TransAir, Young Bros
Flowers: Aloha Cargo, FedEx

The biggest shippers use multiple carriers to keep their shipping options open as circumstances require. For instance, when Aloha Airlines shut down ten years ago, with an open account at Hawaiian Air, growers could still ship that day. Since 9/11, shipping cargo on a commercial passenger plane requires "Known Shipper" status, or a thorough inspection of the item to be transported. Generally, an industry will have discounts with specific carriers, and members will send a majority of their boxes with those companies.

I alternate between thinking of the planet as home — dear and familiar stone hearth and garden — and as a hard land of exile in which we are all sojourners. Today I favor the latter view. The word “sojourner”... invokes a nomadic people’s sense of vagrancy, a praying people’s knowledge of estrangement, a thinking people’s intuition of sharp loss: “For we are strangers before thee, and sojourners, as were all our fathers: our days on the earth are as a shadow, and there is none abiding.” - Annie Dillard

Hawaii Volcano's National Park closed indefinitely, no lava viewing, 80% of the islands papaya crop destroyed and an alarming amount of volcanic smog along the Kona coast. Not a popular vacation destination when your breathing battery acid day after day! I'm Amazed they didn't cut more flights.

Well, looks like the tour boats are back.

I thought I heard a ship horn...looked out the window and yup... there it is... Not sure what cruise line it is. But, that's pretty good news to see them back. At least some money will be pouring into hilo town to see the waterfalls and visit the zoo.

I flew back to Hilo from Honolulu this afternoon and have to say the Big Island was quite a sight. Thick vog in Kohala and Kona as well as over the saddle. Mauna Kea was visible but I couldn't make out Mauna Loa, presumably due to the vog. Despite the clouds over Puna, the ocean entry was obvious; it looked like a storm brewing over Kapoho.
