Manhunt on Big Island
#41
I wasn't speaking about observing highway rules and regulations.

I drive my truck like the old man I'm turning into. I accelerate slowly, slow for corners, when off road in 4X4 I'm slow and careful and watch out for branches and stumps. I drive this way not because I wouldn't like to get there faster or don't enjoy challenging driving. I do it to piss off all of the younger people.

Sorry, I couldn't resist. I do it because I have a 14 year old truck in good condition and I want to keep it that way as long as possible.

Human nature dictates that if it wasn't my truck and 2 or more other people drove it every day and when it broke I got a loner without issue and when getting some wear and age I can expect to be driving a new vehicle soon, then I wouldn't have as much invested in it's condition.

But then if I own the vehicle, subsidized or not, I'm not going to cut a highway median at speed to chase down a traffic scofflaw. I'm not going to haul ass down a rough unpaved road to get to a rural burglary in progress or most any other call. I'm not going to be inclined to PIT a vehicle. I'm not going to want to hop a curb to rush to a call or cut off a fleeing thief, etc. Patrol cars are expendable tools in most agencies. As such they get used and abused and just used up quickly. Overall better law enforcement. But you will pay for it in increased costs.
