NASA, European Space Agency & Lava Caves
#1
NASA is on Big Island this week with their Moon Diver robot exploring lava tubes:

The ESA has put out a call for suggestions in finding, mapping, and exploring lava caves on the moon. If you have any experience hiking lava tubes in Hawaii, check it out:

Interesting. I've often wondered what the plans are to protect astronauts from meteorites who may stay at a moon colony for a long period of time. It's good to see Hawaii is still being used by NASA to test their equipment. There's a long history of Hawaii's rather unique geology being used as a test bed by NASA for planetary missions.

That’s good news. I just so happened to watch a recent NOVA episode “Back to the Moon” tonight about the renewed interest in returning to the moon. During the episode, it was specifically mentioned that lunar lava tubes may be a good location to setup habitation and that robots could be used to explore the tubes to find which was appropriate. It’s cool to know that the big island may help to work out the process for that exploration.

You can watch the episode at this link (until 9/11/19): https://www.thirteen.org/programs/nova/b...on-7jjcvo/

If you just want to watch the portion about lunar lava tubes, fast forward to 46:12

Edited to correct about robots exploring caves.... it wasn’t specifically mentioned.
