Parks and Recreation spends more $$ in Hilo
#11
gtill-

Where will the paddlers store their canoes?

Where will the locals that use Reed Bay as a weekly picnic spot be able to pull their 4x4's onto the beach and have a family day?

What will happen to the taxi businesses that rely on taking tourist into town when they can now walk into town....

Wait, forgot... Cruise ships are declining.

By the way... Even PUNA Canoe Club stores their Canoes at Hilo Bay and uses the bay to practice at so it really affects many local users.

Hawaii can "recruit" tourist by name alone. Beautification of a few parks isn't gonna do anything. Why waste the money to attempt to have people say....

"oooooh Hilo is so pretty"

And besides that... When you purchase a ticket on a cruise ship.... Hilo is part of the package. It's not like a tourist back on the mainland is going to say....

"Oh let's take a cruise to Hawaii Honey....Nah.... that cruise is stopping in Hilo.... that place has a crappy harbor" [Big Grin]

gtill, It's not the tourists that would disrupt the paddlers. They have coexisted nicely for years. The county, on the other hand, seems to feel the canoe clubs are dominating the area. I really don't understand where their paranoia is coming from.

In my opinion, the county abandoned bayfront, the canoe clubs improved it, now the county wants control again (without input from the paddlers).

I don't really have a problem with the county fixing up reeds bay. Just leave bayfront alone.
