By the way, Daniel....do you know Jeff Spaur? And are you guys gonna look into this road sit-ee-a-tion? I am a little concerned that they are spending zillions for such little benefit, and about the way this project was packaged and pitched.

Glen, I actually got it in writing (email) from the head of the HPP Paving Committee that the ballot initiative that started all this was indeed worded in such a way that would lead one to believe that ALL the roads were to be paved. At the last two meetings I attended, the Board stated its intent to proceed with the reduced paving based on assumptions that all would benifit from improved emergency services access, improvements to the current arterial roads, and better mobility for residents within HPP. One Board member remarked, "Nobody will be more than three roads away from a paved cross-HPP road." There were a few at the meetings who cried foul (it seems that at least two of the roads to be paved have Board members living on them,) but no motions were introduced to stop the whole project. There were quite a few people there who appeared eager to get it done and others who appeared pre-occupied with the investment of the bond money pending its expenditure.

Oh, just for the record, I did make a formal statement at one meeting on the matter of the ballot leading us to expect all the roads to be paved. I just got some blank looks and no response from the Board. So it went, and there goes the $12 million.

Cheers,
Jerry

Glen, yes I know Jeff and his wife Manu. We drilled a well for them at his house on kaloli point. He was just nominated as the temporary BOD V.P.

As for the paving, I did some investigating. I asked a friend who works for the county road Dept. He is one of the Bosses. I asked him what the cost per mile to pave was. (He recently did the resurfaceing in waimea) He said that it takes 640 (Approx.) tonnes per mile per lane. So each road in hpp would need two lanes i.e. 1280 tonnes. At $80 a ton (the price when I asked, but now is more Im sure) that would cost $102,400. per mile. There are 137 miles in hpp, (some of which is already paved)so 137 X $102,400 = $14,028,800.
Plus the cost of delivery, the cost of gravel and gradeing, and labor. We have all the resources right here in HPP to do it ourselves; a grader, a roller, who knows how many independent dump trucks, and several paving machines. However it is TOOO late. The loan has been signed and work is underway. By the way, as I understand it, the loan amount is more than $12,000,000. That was just the first draw or first phase. There are two more to come.

One thing I would like to work on as a board member is COMMUNICATION. So things like this stop happening. I have a lot of ideas that I would like to work on, as well as any ideas of the members from my district.

Thanks,

Daniel R Diamond
