Thanks for all your input! I think it might be mold; sometimes, even when it hasn’t rained a lot, I get that reaction after digging in the soil. Raining again at my house!?

this spot in ocean should get 25" of rain / yr if there were no islands...
high volcanic islands make/cause their own weather this island has areas with 10" /yr... and areas w/ over 300" / yr .... iow 1 foot to 25 feet / yr in Puna you may see 30 days straight w/ rain... or 30 days straight w/o rain,... and this can happen in same year... its normal ps these islands are all sinking faster than the climate change is making oceans rise... this isn't the Marshall Islands, ......our islands sink in about 33 million years.. ie Kure, the largest atoll on Earth is now about 33 Mil yrs old, yet it was as large or larger than the Big Island 30 Million yrs ago.. same with Maui Nui it was larger than the Big Island is today... most of the flora and fauna on Maui Nui is closely related, compared to Atooi, Wahoo, and Owhyhee, thus see proof..
