Looking to get some recommendations about where to board our cat for a week while we fly to the mainland. We had used Barking Dog Kennels for the last 20 years but they recently closed for good.

Losing Barking Dog is a big sad thing. I heard the County Humane society is taking it over? I don't know of any others nearby, maybe the kennel in south Kona? We have someone house sit when we have to leave, and, we pay them a nice, fair daily rate. Peace of mind for the property and the pets are well loved in their home environment.
Cats are usually easy keepers, can you have somebody come by once a day to take care of it?
A long time ago in another state, my wife operated a pet sitting and boarding business (licensed, insured, etc). We could only board one animal at a time so most of it was in-home care. The added benefit to the customer was bringing mail in, having a daily security check, etc. All the customers were repeats so we even helped a few times when somebody got locked out of their house since we had a spare key. Back then security / nanny cams weren't very common and customers loved getting daily pics of their animals texted or emailed to them. One time a very frequent customer called her in a panic because she realized 3 days into her trip that she had forgotten to schedule service and nobody was checking on her cats. We immediately drove to their house to assess the situation. The cats had knocked the food off the top of the fridge and were well fed, and the auto-waterer was still mostly full (as was the litter box). |
