Help - HP Laptop problems
#1
I need a laptop hard drive external enclosure. Office Depot does not sell them. I am realitvely new to the island and do not know of other computer stores. Any suggestions where to get one???

Thanks in advance!

PS - I need the external enclosure so that I can put my laptop hard drive in it to download files before it goes back to HP for service. They will reformat my hard drive to fix it...

I need an "enclosure" for a hard drive. Not a hard drive.

But thanks for the info...

How much space do you need. You could try a USB flash drive. You can get some up to several gigs. They sell them at Walmart and Office Depot.

That would be fine to back up your files but not to mirror backup your hard disk.

its not an enclosure but it will let you connect IDE and SATA to USB.

They also have Disk Enclosures on their site....

You may find that you can't easily put a laptop hard drive into an external drive enclosure. I think that a laptop HD has different mounting points and connectors than a standard HD that you can put into an enclosure. You'll have to be concerned about a matching power supply, too.

And it's not clear what you are planning to do: take out your HD and put it into an external enclosure so that you can download files - to another computer or HD? Then, you're going to reinstall it and send it in for repair? You're certain that the HD works just not inside your laptop?

Caveat: I'm a Mac guy, so what do I know?

What about that computer repair place next to Verna's in Mountain View; maybe he can provide one or a source for one? "Airin's" or something like that?

I've bought from them many times over the years. They have been in business a very long time for a computer parts store. Not all of their stuff is the highest quality but most of it is fine. I have an older version of this that works fine. For what you want you don't need an enclosure.

Jimbo also has one to use, his is a USB to laptop IDE- 40pin - there are different types (he got it off of ebay to help get data off of dead or dieing laptops...)

Also he can help you guys configure something if you need, possibly from stuff around...(He is telling me all of this stuff.... I really have low computer knowledge....)

I have contacted LarryT to use his. He is in HPP and a short bike ride from our rental. I will let you know if that falls thru. And if so I will take you up on the offer!!! mahalo [Big Grin]
