License Plates Stolen?

I wonder what the intent of the supreme brain trust(s) behind this stupidity thinks will get them?

Thief steals 9 Polynesian Voyaging Society specialty license plates in Kona : Big Island Now

Other than either now giving the Police "probable cause" to run ANYONE driving a car with these Polynesian style license plates through a "wants/warrants/vehicle match" check OR there is a "collectors market" of people willing to pay hundreds of dollars to get one to hang on the wall?

They won't be on a vehicle. They will be sold on eBay or similar. One of my vehicles, which has the Volcanoes National Park plates, has had them stolen twice now. At least it only costs $5 to get a replacement set.
