On Sunday, Dec. 29, drivers an unauthorized message posted on one of the boards left drivers shocked and prompted an investigation led by Hawaii Department of Transportation officials.

The incident happened in the afternoon hours on Moanalua Freeway near Moanalua Gardens.

Officials said the sign has been disabled and will be reset with safety messaging.

I cannot find anything that states what this "unauthorized message" was... Maybe it was "Ballistic Missile Incoming"

My 15-year-old grandson claims this was the sign:

Since this is coming from my 15-year-old grandson who also claims it's all over various social media sites, I cannot confirm or deny its authenticity!

HiloJulie,
I have no idea whether the photo is legit or not, but when the added message on the photo covers the license plates of the cars so you can’t determine which state they’re driving in…. I’m suspicious.

I did see a portable road sign yesterday outside the national park in Volcano which read:

HOTPE,

I was explaining that exact sentiment to my grandson when three clicks later, he shoves this picture into my face:

(If you zoom in you can see Hawaii plates on the cars)

So, again, since this is coming from my 15-year-old grandson and "social media" I cannot confirm or deny its authenticity!

OK, maybe.
But then why are the license plates so blurry, but the overhead orange letters on the road sign are sharp & clear?

I’m still not entirely convinced.

If you Google what it says, you can come up with dozens of posts including the one from HDOT.

Well, in as much as it pains me to say it, but my grandson was right:

"Maybe there's another golf tournament?"

Or could it be a secretly coded message being sent to some very proud boys letting them know it's safe here in Hawaii to be the real them and there is no need for them to hide behind a fake bravado?

Especially considering the emoticon code for "warm smiley face"

There are surely exceptions but there really does seem to be a correlation between fur and a need for attention. Well, at least they didn't endanger anyone's lives right? Just boys being boys. Good clean fun.
I wish you all the best.
