I belive the right A/C unit will filter the fumes out.

I know that a seperation of lava levels when drilled through, will provide a breeze to blow out a lighter above it. It's called convection current and can be quite strong and always cool. If one were to drill mabe 4' deep, any tube or seperation space BELOW that could supply a major source of clean cool air to a room. I belive the underground temp is 58F.

The fans and A/C remedy will work if on grid, but would be a stress off grid. The cool air is under us, and in Puna, it's accesable!

Ok... Now I'm looking at Hanohano's list she sent out.

It says it was reprinted from the site I previously listed... however, I do see some differences.

The previous link doesn't really have the food listed she lists...

I'll throw it out here cause this part of the list kind of cracks me up... as I could get by with much less.

THE FOLLOWING IS FOR A FOUR-PERSON HOUSEHOLD
(5 day emergency food supply)

1 can of each:
Tuna, Beef Stew, Red or Pink Salmon, Picked Vegetables, Chunked Chicken

2 can of each:
Chili, Vienna Sausage(I'll Pass), Spam (I'll pass), Corned Beef Hash, Corned Beef, Deviled Ham, Pork and Beans

5 cans of assorted vegetables
6 cans of Condensed soup
9 Cans of Assorted Fruit
10 Cans Assorted Fruit Juices

1 Box each of:
Seedless Raisins
Instant Hot Cereal
Cold Cereal

2 packages Soda Crackers

2lbs Rice

1 package cookies

1 pt. Salad oil
1 box sugar
1 jar Jelly
1 bottle Instant orange drink
1 can instant coffee
1 small salt and pepper shaker
1 jar curry powder
1 jar peanutes
1 jar mustard
1 bottle ketchup
1 jar Peanut Butter
Pet Food as Needed
Water 1 gallon per person per day.

(Mind you that Hanohano comes from a "large" family)[]

I would agree on the food list. We went with MRE's for the emergency kits for the vehicles. Pantry at home provides other food items, as well as 2 case of MRE's. May not eat well, but they have advantages.

Volcano, hurricane, earthquake, they could all leave you wishing you had prepared better. I remember the morning of the earthquake, here on Oahu, the long lines of people waiting to be escorted into WalMart and Times, only an hour or two after the quake. I remember thinking, "they couldn't be hungry yet!" I know I could do better but I have at least canned goods and bottled water for two weeks. Sanitation? There is an empty field near my house and I have tools to dig a hole.

The safe room is an interesting topic. As far as vog is concerned an air conditioner would clean the air pretty well because of the condensation on the cooling coil, but the drainage from the coil would be sulfuric acid. If there was ash, then filters and A/C coils would load up pretty quick. How quick I don't know. Ease of cleaning, again I don't know. Structuraly a saferoom is supposed to stand up to high winds, earthquakes, intruders, etc. It would be best incorporated into the original design of a house, such as having a poured concrete block section on the ground floor, then having an open, airy, wood living space above. I have seen things that looked like concrete septic tanks that can be buried under your front steps or in the back yard, but they were little more than fallout shelters. For the vog you don't need structural strength but you do need properly designed ventilation with filtering. However you can't tell ahead of time which disaster you are going to face so build a saferoom to cover all bases.

I have heard that if you soak a material in a baking soda water solution it neutralizes the SO2. I was thinking of taking a box fan and strapping a standard home furnace filter on it that was soaked in that solution. Any ideas on that?

Also I don't now how long they will work or last but a quality gas mask with a current filter that is stated to work with SO2 would also work. I bought 40 masks a few months ago with filters that take out SO2 and the mask have a easy to change prefilter to take out the ash. My biggest fear living in Ocean view is that if something really bad happens with that Volcano that the roads will be blocked with all the broken down cars from Ocean View and we will be stuck. The bulk of the Gov. help will go to the large towns and resort areas. I am selling them if someone is interested at my cost 35 for a mask and filter. If someone wants more info send me an email.
