Protec structures are being built:

The are a number of SIP Structural Insulated Panel structrures that have been built here over the years. We are remodeling a 1970's Aluminum framed modular. All the panels are numbered.... kinda cool erector set stuff...

I just got this reply from Wall Street Journal Writer Sara Lin in regards to her article The House in a Box. In it she mentions the "Flat Boxes".

Aloha Damon,

Great to hear from someone in the Islands! (I'm kama'aina myself &
still
keep an 808 cell phone though it's been about 8 years since I've been
on
the mainland. My parents are still there, on Waialae Nui).

Thanks for your note.. I believe you can get any of those three vendors
I profiled to send materials to Honolulu, but you'll pay dearly for
shipping I suspect. If you're open to other types of prefab beside
kit-home / panelized / flat-packed, I believe San Francisco architect
Michelle Kaufman has a factory and distribution in Hawaii. Her prefab
is
modular -- think open-sided boxes fitted together.

For a comprehensive list list of American & other prefab manufacturers:

Hope this helps, best of luck!

Cheers,

Sara Lin

Wow! And a top o' the mornin to ya.[Smile]

Woke up this morning and realized I was blueskying all this. Gotta sell off the "mistake" on the Westside before I can think about anything else. Protec sounds pretty good though.

You may want to get in contact with David M.... He has a wealth of personal information on buiding a modular here...
We wish we knew who the manufacturer of our modular was, but it was constructed in '73 & building dept only has the architect listed on the original permit & we don't have the original permit info....
It was modified in 2000 with permit by a building buffoon, so we have had fun!
