Outside or inside shower - mold issue
#1
I got the plans for my house from the owner .Inside the house it's only a bathtub. The shower is outside. The owner told me that in Puna there is too much mold problems,so he wanted to keep"that kind of stuff" outside.
Our lots are in the same subdivision, but mine is considerably closer to the ocean(2 short blocks).
For me shower is a must.I don't use the bathtub at all, since once I experienced some kind of a heart problem while taking a bath.Nothing major, but it scared the hell out of me.And if you don't have much time,it's not practical anyway.I heard that it is almost common thing to have a shower outside.I am not the athletic type.I guess,it could be cold sometimes?
If anyone who has a house in Puna close to the ocean would share some ideas,I would appreciate it.
Btw, is P&P better to have by the ocean?

I dont't have an outdoor shower yet, but I would very much like to put one on my "ohana". They can be absolutely gorgeous. See a fine example of one among these photos:

I am near the ocean, as is the house in the photos above.

I would want my shower to have a covering over it, perhaps one that retracts because, as we learned in December, it can rain like hell right on the coast, too.

I think there WOULD be times when it would be too cold for an outdoor shower. My sister and I were staying in a vacation rental in Kapoho in February. We had to get up early to go the airport. I am glad that the shower was indoors at that moment. I am sure it would have been fine later in the day.

Still, most of the time I think it would be not just fine but fantastic. There is nothing like showering outdoors in Hawaii, although I think it works a little better on the dry side.

I would not want my outdoor shower to be the only available shower, but if there were other compensating factors (price etc), I would not be deterred. And, it sounds like you have the plumbing to install a shower laters indoors if you wish.

Instead of sleeping on it, though, perhaps you could "shower on it"! Go over at a time of day when you might ordinarily shower, and take one!

We have an outdoor shower and 2 indoor showers.

The young-ins use the outdoor shower almost exclusively... us old folks use the indoor shower. As SB says, he's got that skin that needs ironing now.... no need to scare anyone!

One other consideration. When we lived down beyond Beach in HPP, one neighbor had an outdoor shower by his pool, with a lava wall around. That area was more mosquitoey (it wasn't used daily & there were other water features nearby, but something to think about....)

What we did to alleviate the mozzies is run 6 mil plastic as the "shower pan" into a drain that connects to the wastewater line. The plastic is about 4" below grade and then filled the "pan" with gravel and big stepping stones. The water drains away and doesnt get muddy or become a mosquito farm.

For us "po' folks" who haven't got a shower yet (we take a cold water shower with the hose) an outdoor shower would be the height of luxury, and I'm saving up for it. In our situation it would be way cheaper to set up a free-standing outdoor shower than doing all the plumbing etc for an indoor shower.
