Well, I'm pretty sure no animal should consume any amount of it but it surely is better than other stronger chemicals.

boric acid is fairly safe, they use it in eye wash stations in most work places...

if I remember right, boric acid dyhdrates cockroaches...sucking them dry of any fluids. But because of the way it's applied, not sure I'd wanna use it around pets!
