Growning up in Honolulu, I don't recall that bolt lightning was ever an issue there. We "always" saw "sheet" lightning, which was probably flashes from bolts that didn't involve the ground. I do recall the impressive displays of bolt lightning in recent winters on the East side BI. I wonder if the island size and elevations make a difference as to how a thunderstorm develops and affects whether lightning will make a connection between the ground and the cloud?
