Mary, here is a link to the Border Collie Society of America's approved breeder list:

http://www.bordercolliesociety.com/BC_In...htm#hawaii

There is only one listed in Hawaii, and they are on Oahu. Of course, there may be others, since the BCSA has pretty high standards and only lists breeders who meet some very strict requirements. I have mostly seen "border collie mix" pups for sale here on the Big Island. My father used to raise and train BCs in Texas, and they are indeed the smartest dogs in the world. I'm sure you know this, but they are a "handfull," requiring lots of exercise, training, and attention. It's worth it for the right person, though.

There is someone who advertises "working" border collies on craigslist about every 18 months or so, as I recall they prefer owners who will have work for the dog, since unemployed border collies can become self-employed at something negative if you don't give them a job to do. You might want to put a "wanted" ad on craigslist.

Aloha Mary: Sitting next to me is a female (spayed) purebred AKC reg BC 15 mos old. She came from Camelot Farms kennel in Pap'aikou. The breeder is Mieke Inouye. She is very conscientious of breed quality and my dog Mele was the result of an imported Australian father and a UK mother to strengthen the local genes. This same mother and father recently produced a litter, but I do not know if any are still available. You could ask at 964-5201
(Oh my--while I was looking up the phone number Tricia beat me to it! So take this as a second to Tricia's post...

The Ludwigs above Hilo also have lovely working border collies. Theirs are "busier" than Mieke's although Mieke also has had some of the Ludgwig border colllies before, too. They all get inter-mixed after awhile but Mieke and the Ludwigs are two good sources.

If you aren't insisting on purebreds these look like great dogs, they have a link to a youtube video too.

Plenty of super smart good dogs at the Humane Society (3 on the island), Rainbow Friends, and other rescues. Something like 10 dogs per day are put to death in shelters on this island. Makes it difficult (to me at least) to justify any intentional breeding.

Don't set your sights too high in finding work for these dogs. The market's extremely depressed right now and they are likely to find only low paying menial work such as chasing rats and mongeese.
