Ae Ae Banana

Has anyone had experience growing the Ae Ae
white and green veriegated banana. Was given one.
Was told it was difficult to grow

Hi Wyatt,

We have a keiki and it's taking a while to grow. I think that getting it into the ground, in a planting hole amended with very rich soil and mulch will help it to grow.

It's a rare banana plant so take good care of it. The leaves and fruit are very unusual in color.

Aloha Wyatt,

Don't put any lime on it or the white parts will turn green and it will look like any other banana. Semi-shaded doesn't hurt ae'ae either because the white parts can sunburn in full sun. But they can handle full sun if that's where you put it.

Mulch the heck out of it, give it water and let it grow. Ae'ae do grow slower than the other bananas and they don't put out as many keiki but they are pretty hardy once they are established. The bananas will have stripes on them, when you get fruit. Doesn't taste as good as the apple banana, IMHO, but taste is all relative anyway.

Hi Mark & Richard! Our neighbor brought a bunch of those wonderful Cuban bananas over to us and so we picked up a Cuban tree at the Makuu Market Sunday...were gonna go get some mulch at the Hilo green waste location...these are the nicest bananas I've seen since we've been here...

Keep an eye out for Ice Cream Bananas, which may be finding their way to the markets soon. It's a variety that's not as popular, possibly because it might be harder to grow commercially. It's larger in girth than Apple Bananas but not much longer. It can supposedly be put in the freezer, then eaten like ice cream because it doesn't freeze hard. Hence, the name. The taste is reminscent of an apple pie with crumb crust. That's what a friend who brought some over said, and I agree! The Banana Boys said that they have a few trees of this variety, so ask them to bring some to Maku'u.

Aloha Les...heard about these a few times but you are the first to explain about putting them in the freezer. One of Da Boys told me he's not crazy about 'em 'cause they are kinda mushy...but if you put 'em in the freezer that makes sense then.
