Would Puna Geothermal Expand?

Im conviced Helco is Satan!!! [Big Grin] same as that ethanol crap that has killed all my gas powered tools.....

2 Chain Saws = Dead
New generator = Dead
Power washer = sputtering and barely running
2 compressors (for my nail guns)= Dead
High Wheel Ball Mower = priming plunger is cracked due to the ethanol disolving the plastic primer...
Gas powered Water pump = Dead

Seems pretty much anything with plastic gas tanks or rubber hoses is getting screwed up... Im guessing that the carburetor is full of plastic residue/gunk and clogged up or something......

Buying all my gas from Mountain View General Store as they sell Non Ethanol fuel!!! w00t! [:p]

OK, correction fair profit is not a dirty word. Gouging because of pi** poor prior planning and a monopoly on the market is obscene and the politicians and CEO's involved should be hung from the nearest lamp post. And in fact ethanol makes a great paint stripper and I would no never use that Sh*t in my vehicle. Another case of letting elected idiots dictate any policy more complicated than getting out of bed in the morning run things.[V]

All gasoline sold in Hawaii has an ethanol mixture of 10%. It can fluctuate between a low of 7% to a maximum high of 12%, but according to the state, there is no such thing as ethanol free gasoline on Hawaii regardless of what anyone tells you. Only if the amount exceeds 15% are additional signage required, otherwise the standard sticker is all needed on a pump. Gasoline with a 10% mixture of ethanol has been sold in the US for decades with no adverse effect on equipment. All fuel delivery systems can handle 15% ethanol without any problem.

What you may be experiencing is what has been occurring in many rural areas of the mainland for the last year. Doctored fuel. Somewhere between the gasoline leaving the refinery (it’s tested at that point) and your fuel tank, something may be added. Normally whatever additives are introduced are planned and tested, but with skyrocketing prices, some people have devloped hidden ways to dilute the gasoline to maximize profits or hide theft. Many of these items can cause problems in fuel delivery systems. The most common is used paint thinner and other used flammable cleaning products.

I’m not sure what agency is responsible for gasoline inspections for quality, but if you suspect doctored gasoline, you should report it.

Bob, a flier came out in Marine circles, that ethanol was creating havoc on some boats, especially outboards. They named 4 stations on Oahu who carry it, and some on neighbor islands.

Ethanol replaced a previous oxygenator called mtb or mtsb? That was found to kill fish and pollute water.

It seems the greens think they can solve all problems with forced regulation. The Prius with battery pollution, the mandatory flourescent bulb with mercury in one of the only unlined dumps in the nation, and a major mercury pollution problem in the ocean. Ethanol which is causing havoc in the food chain, and is doing some damage to vehicles and equipment.

I'd like to see what sort of grants and lobbying have been used before their final approval.

I got an answer to this and it appears there is validity to this. I was told that fuel grade ethanol isn’t causing any problems, all marine engines and fuel delivery systems can handle up to 15% with no problem. But, it seems ethanol is a good water absorber, so in a marine environment, you have a greater chance that the water concentration will rise thus causing the problems. I was also told that the normal fuel/water separation process isn't that good outside the refining/mixing location as it's not the same as separating water from normal petroleum fuel. Probably Hawaii doesn’t refine multiple grades of gasoline, one specific for marine use without ethanol, as you’ll find other places.

Thanks for the follow up Bob!!! I really appreciate it!!

Maybe you can call any of the Marine Repair Business's around Hilo and ask them if they are seeing any Ethanol related issues...
I bet you get a very different response [Wink]

I was in Boat House Hawaii about a year ago and was told that it was causing many problems.

If I remember correctly back in 2006 it voided your warranty to use even 10% ethanol, maybe it was E-85. Sorry I cant remember back that far [Sad]

It was really nice to see a story on geothermal in the Tribune. Maybe someday we can power all of the Big Island that way.
See you in the surf
