Bullwinkle,
Thanks for that one. I remember these guys when I lived on that side and was one of the few that bought some, all went to Japan then and you had to kind of know somebody to get some. Next time that I'm there it's Abalone for me. The Lack The Lack Toons

What we're looking at is a gourmet product that's prime for expansion; one in which the laws of supply and demand determine price and the more that's produced, the better the price (unless, of course, there's an "abalone cartel" that controls supply and keeps prices high, which feeds the rich and denies the poor). In addition to the meat, their shells are processed into beautiful beads and inlay for jewelry, and they're pricey as well.

Miss Monterey Ca. use to go to the restaurants on Cannery Row and have calamari!
Now settle for KTA Tako(squid) poke, (wait till next morning, it is marked down a fraction of previous days prices)

I buy it all of the time, but it is not the same as California Wild Abalone that I grew up with. Not only that there is a GREAT lobster farm over there. And they also have Dungeness Crabs. They are there for the restaurants over there but sell for cash to the public. It is not easy to find, but once you do, you will be making regular visits if you you love shell fish like we do.
They have frozen calamari at several places in town... from Monterey. Note: the shells from these abalone are quite small and not as pretty as wild abalone. y quote: Aloha au i Hawai`i, devany www.myhawaiianhome.blogspot.com www.eastbaypotters.blogspot.com
