New Lava Viewing hours
#1
I'm sure you've heard about the new hours at the kalapana Lava Viewing area. (5-10pm) daily.

There are a couple of other developments as well.

There have been frequent car breakins during off hours when there's no staff present. Beware !

DLNR officers are making random visits to the area during off hours and issuing citations to trespassers. There's a potential $500-$5000 fine. Citations have been given.

hey Greg, thanks for the news.
So does this mean that cars are not at risk during the hours that are staffed?

During the hours of operation the parking area is staffed by either State Highway dept people, or county Roads people. They are there primarily to direct traffic, provide lighting and public safety. I haven't heard of any breakins or thugery during open hours. A county police officer comes on site at 7:00.

FWIW -

The sign on H-130 past Pahoa says it's only open from 5:00 to 8:00.

I trust Gregs first hand account before any sign on H-130 at this point.

I think the difference between the 5-8 vs. 5-10 is that the last car permitted in is at 8. Folks have 'til 10 to leave.

Exactly Robin ...
The sign apprises people of the entry hours, not the time of last car out.
