Oh Pam - how horrible for you and your sheep! Do not hesitate to shoot any dog attacking your sheep. After all, it is your responsibility to protect them. I have had pig hunting dogs who have gone feral attack my animals too, so I can empathize with your heartache. Did you get a good look at the dog that got away so that you could circulate a description (with reward?) to your neighbors?
I hope this is the last time ever.

So sorry Pam! Everyone loses here, even the dog that was doing what it was taught. Its owner is fully responsible.

Oh man, I am so sorry for Bobs and your loss. That's heartbreaking. And heartbreaking that you have to kill an animal due to it's owners bad heart.
What are the laws about shooting a gun on ones own property?
Here in Juneau, you can't shoot a firearm within half a mile of a road.
I was thinking of bringing my handgun with me since we'll be camping on the property but I've got to check into local laws first.

has anyone tried llamas?
they bond immediately with sheep and/or goats
and they kick the cr*p out of wolves, coyotes and dogs menacing the herds.
had a friend whos neighbor was just going nuts trying to keep his herd alive.
bought a mature female llama and placed it with the sheep.
the first nite 3 dead lambs
the next nite none
the third night 2 dead wolves.
maybe you should check with the state about their import?

Llamas are not sufficient against multiple dogs. And they are useless at night, as they cannot see well. Even during the day they serve more as a scare tactic. The two things that seem to work are electromesh and LGDs like Pyrrenees or Anatolians. We have used both with our Shetlands.
A little of this, a little of that, pretty soon it's a farm.

Yes, but what do you feed these friendly "monsters"? And what does it cost a month?
