Aloha,
We have just moved here with our 3 Rhodesian Ridgebacks, and i see there are no dog parks or dog beaches. Does anybody know why this is, or how to go about forming a dog park. I heard there is a skate park being built here in Pahoa, maybe there would be room to fence in a area of it, and have it be a dog park?!
Any thoughts on this would be great!

Considering the lack of people parks in Puna and the amount of effort it will take to correct that fact I would guess that an official dog park will be a long way off.
I have not seen the lack of dog parks prevent people from owning or exercising thier dogs though. Perhaps some dog owners would have better input to offer on this subject

I don't know about Puna or Hilo beaches, but not too far north of Hapuna, at the 69 milemarker, there's a beach where dogs are allowed. I've seen many dogs romping in the waves there off leash. And at Spencer's we were allowed to take our leashed dogs on the trail that goes to a little beach north of there.

ALoha Kevin,
This might help you navigate the parks on the island.

It's a bit of a trek in, but the new Kaimu beach is quite long and would give your dogs plenty of room to run and there's usually few or no people there. Take 130 all the way to Kalapana and turn right at 137, park at the dead end and hike the 15 minutes or so to the beach. People bring dogs to Kehena, but I would do so as early as possible, like before 9 am so as not to disturb people. Obviously bring plenty of waste bags!
