So in our quest to move to the Big Island, I clearly need to find a job. Any thoughts on where to go to start that process? I am in Retail and have been for nearly 20 years. I have searched online and continue to search online but I wondered if anyone knew about anything locally that I should check out. Thanks in advance for the info.

Since no one has jumped into this thread...I will. But, to tell you the truth it takes a lot of intestinal fortitude. I would start right now, looking, looking and looking...check out everything. Look into what it is you do and check out the yellow pages, online, whatever means.

Here is a great link: http://career.uhh.hawaii.edu/HI_jobs_alumni.php

We lucked out since Tony was already working in a Toyota shop over 20 years...so now he's at BI Toyota. You will be paid less. Your working conditions will be different from what you are used to in many ways. And that's just how it is.

It took over one year for me to get a job with the State. Many people don't get State and Local Government jobs because the hoops you have to jump through and all the testing you do is more than a lot of people want to deal with. Not to mention the lengthy criminal background search. I have heard stories from others who after two years are still searching for jobs.

So - anything you can do ahead of time is in your favor. Remember that people come and go so frequently here that one of the reasons is that it's hard for local companies to invest in a person who comes from the mainland and then leaves after one or two years. So it's an uphill battle.

It's something I have dealt with but I hung in there and finally was able to get a good State job.

Good luck and hang in there too!!!
