Faye Hanohano accuses UH of Mauna Kea desecration
#1
Puna Rep. Faye Hanohano has mailed 1,200 newsletters accusing the University of Hawaii of desecrating Mauna Kea by allowing telescope development on the sacred summit.

This lady is nuts! Pure and simple... I'm definately not voting for her next time.

It does not appear to have been a statement based on “religion” but rather on “culture”, which does not violate the First Amendment. Although the lines can be blurred, cultural is based on a non religious belief where religion is based on a religious faith. Example, opposing the development of mall on a piece of land that is considered sacred based on it being the ancestral birthplace of an indigenous people is not the same as opposing it based on it being the ancestral birthplace of a religious movement. It’s a very difficult concept to follow as often the two cross paths. However, in these difficult financial times where the government is asking everyone to sacrifice, one would think reserving the newsletter for information directly pertaining to the actions of the office of the legislature for all constituents is more appropriate than an op-ed piece related to that legislator’s personal situation.

To think, I sent Faye an email asking for a little support opposing chicken fighting and dog fighting and I get a letter back asking for my support opposing telescope building. I guess I know where here priorities lay. OK, I really didn't get a letter from her, but I might Smile

I've seen sacred land arguments on the mainland and all of the reservation land tended to be sacred until a casino needed to be built on it. Here, a whole mountain?

I will say that for me, having animals kill each other for fun is pretty much sacrilegious (and I think should be for all of those folks who go to church on Sunday) and I guess for Faye building telescopes on Mauna Kea is the same. We all have our priorities in life.

If she feels that that is what her constituency wants that is what she should do. So let her know that that is NOT the will of the majority, and she better be representing us if she wants to stay in congress.

Faye is obviously not the representative to carry a thoughtful Puna- centric agenda. Nor, any agenda.

I tried to tell you all last election that she doesn't have a clue.
You would think she would be more concerned with jobs, crime, homeless and the needs of our community.
It’s’ unfortunate that we will have her for the next 18 months until the next election.
I just hope that Fred Blas will run against her again.
