A look into hawaii today from the new york times of all places
at times not an easy read for me, Paul can be grating
... paul sucked me in with "mosquito coast" in the 80's this two pages as insightful as his fiction

I also enjoyed "Mosquito Coast". His non fiction travel writing is very interesting also. I liked "Riding the Iron Rooster"(1988); an autobiographical account of a trip by rail accross mainland China.
I didn't know he was a resident of hawaii. Cool.

'Hotel Honolulu' made for an interesting read for me 8 years ago when I was working on Oahu.

That is interesting and an interesting perspective.
Man I hated the father in Mosquito Coast when I read that book. May have to grab it again...at the library, of course.

Theroux was not to kind to the missionary characters either. I always saw the father character as representing blind technology ... all wrapped up in a twisted father figure kind of a dark ward cleaver - grin

Hotel Honolulu to a friend who is enjoying it.[8D]

Just read Mosquito Coast again. It was odd - when I read it the first time as a younger man I strongly identified with the boy. This time as a bit older man I found myself identifying with alot of the fathers ideals.
Just grabbed 3 more books at Mt View Library today. The stories are quick reads and enjoyable.

I keep revisiting Hesse the same way .... Siddhartha feeling very "puna ish" and vice versa, this time around... The glass bead game one of my all time favorites

About half way through Hotel Honolulu. The characters really hit a mark in many ways especially after living in Waikiki a short time when I was 20.
Also about half way through Stranger At The Palazzo D'Oro.
Theroux has a way of speaking to the hearts of men from perspectives we perhaps would not want to admit about ourselves.
Anyway...nice to read introspective kinda stuff. Thanks for bringing this author back to my mind.
