I ran a Google search but was unable to find any rock climbing gyms, weight lifting gyms, or martial art (specifically Brazilian Jiu Jitsu) gyms in Pahoa or it's surrounding towns.
Any of you with inside info know of such a place to do BJJ or rock climbing? A weight training gym isn't high on my list, but would be fun to know of.
Or maybe someone here has a mat in their garage and would like to roll for a few sessions a week? I'm still a white belt so I'm still on basic techniques. I also haven't rolled in nearly 3 years [:I]
Thanks!
Jason

Gotcha. Hilo seems kind of far to someone who won't be having a vehicle.
How do you go about finding a martial arts place to train with?

There are free HeleOn buses from Pahoa (and even Kalapana & Seaview areas) into Hilo every day but Sunday... & BJ Penns is just a few blocks rom some of bus route stops.

Hello Jason, I work out at Spencer's Health Club in downtown Hilo. Its been voted the best east side gym for several years running. It is larger than Penn's gym and has more equipment, however, it is not air conditioned and that is a deal breaker for some. Many of the guys working out there participate in martial arts training held at the Hilo Armory, downtown on Shipman. There is also training at some of the County Recreational facilities. The most popular being Waiakea Rec Center on Kamehameha. I know of no facilities in Puna, which is too bad. Many of us would give up our drive to Hilo in a heartbeat if there were decent facilities nearby.

Carey, thanks. I will look into it. I bet it's expensive there. Have you trained there?
What are some of the country recreational facilities? I ran a quick google search but didn't find anything specific.
http://www.co.hawaii.hi.us/index.htm wasn't much help either.
Carrie, I will check it out.

For great cross training combined with culturally enriching activity check out a Big Island canoe club. The season starts up in the spring; any Bayfront club will welcome you. Outrigger canoe paddling is a multi-generational (keiki to tutu).
