Internet Radio
#1
This isn’t specific to Puna but it’s worth sharing. Most of you probably already know that there are over 15,000 radio stations available on the internet, most of them commercial free. There is every type of musical genre as well as talk and educational info and much that I’m not even aware of. What was news to me, until recently, was that there are now internet radios that are stand alone devices. You don’t need a computer. All you need is a wireless router in your home and your little tabletop radio is ready to go.

I’ve always been a big radio fan and so this has been a big discovery for me. Listening to radio on the computer is ok but having a table top radio that is always connected and has your favorite stations saved is much more practical. When I’m driving around I tune into local radio. When I get home I don’t want to bring advertising into my home if I can help it.

You can start exploring radio on you computer right now by going to www.shoutcast.com or any other of many radio services that makes it easier to search for what you want. Shoutcast also has a simple setup tool to start your own station for free. Too cool. Seems like some Punatic with time on their hands will have to try this.

I have a current favorite station. Check out www.psychedelicjukebox.com Some guy who used to own a record store in the 60's has the most amazing collection of music from that era. I’ll frequently hear groups and songs that I haven’t heard for over 40 years. Lots of music that I’ve never heard before, much of it honestly probably shouldn’t be heard anymore, but at least it’s all interesting. My radio spends most of it’s time there at any rate. And no commercials!!

I often take advantage of Hawaii's time zone difference - to listen to shows that I may have otherwise missed. Many actual radio stations (commercials included) stream their broadcasts over the internet.

If you want to find a radio station by genre, state, etc. here is a nice link. There are dozens of ways to sort through stations and programs.

Don't get too excited.
Assume the best and ask questions.

I've seen those radios too and they are great! Thanks for your recommendations. Unfortunately not everyone in Puna has always-on broadband but one day, who knows, we'll get to join the 21st century.

Actually, someone on dialup internet can actually listen to most of the stations. There are a number of Hawaii stations that offer streaming. This is really nice for those that are in "reception challenged" locations.
One could probably get wireless broadband internet from a couple of the local providers, broadband from cell carriers, and possibly even satellite. There are choices - you just have to pay. What happens when dialup gets cancelled?
