Here is a very helpful link that you can subscribe to free that will notify you of all emergencies and road closures etc..via email, phone. Great way to stay informed as of now, Hwy 11 at Mile Marker 103,roads are closed and utility poles are involved due to an accident!
Sharing is caring.

Civil defense has a direct link for Hawaii County:

Note that in the latest tsunami scare, the phone function stopped working as the phone lines became overloaded. Text and email continued to function.

Thanks for the Public Service announcements, they sound very helpful, I'll have to check them out. I had thought about a scanner radio this sounds like a good alternative...cheaper.

Spyder,
I haven't tried it, but this site is supposed to be a streaming scanner feed.

Thanks, I live with a scanner junkie. Got to try this out. When we were back last year we noticed a big difference in the law enforcement dispatchers from here in WA. They sounded like normal compassionate people. Looking forward to our house to sell, so we can be at home in Puna.
Peace and long life

Wish they could split this into East and West Hawaii, and you could sign for East or West or both. I signed up and have gotten 6 text msgs about the fire in Waikoloa.

Apparently there are at least two scanner applications on iPhones, too.
