Since we have the acreage, we are considering fencing some and having some cows or goats, maybe a horse or two. Here (on the mainland) we would have to carry liability insurance in case the animals escaped or if someone trespassed and was bitten or otherwise injured. In order to get this insurance, you have to have what is known as a "working farm" where you are actually earning income.
Is it also that way in Hawaii? What kind of insurance do farm animal owners need?

I've never heard of such a thing. I guess I've heard it all now. That would be a deterrent I would think to living a sustainable lifestyle, because the average small farmers probably wouldn't qualify under the earning income clause. The Big Island is such a rural, live as you please, type of place I'd be surprised if this was a law if anybody would follow it. Maybe someone else can chime in, but my gut would say that this is not an issue here. Angela

Have your animals all sign a release of liability holding you harmless in the event they bite someone.

Personally, I think it would depend on your area. If you are in AG land, it would be expected that you would have reasonable livestock and would not be liable. However, if you are raising animals not expected based on the zoning, there could be issues. For example, if you are in AG land and raising a few cows or goats, it probably wouldn't be an issue. If you are raising alligators, that's a whole 'nother story. Check with the County though. Even in AG land, there are restrictions -- things like the number of pigs before you are considered to be running a commercial piggery, or number of cows per acre.

Many animals are illiterate. If they can't write their own name a paw or hoof print will do.
