I thought about buying and builing there, knowing that Pele would eventually claim it for herself. The land was under $10K and a small shack would be a relatively small price to pay for the experience of a lifetime. I feel for the folks who invested too much, not having anticipated Pele's arrival.

We went last night. IF you want to see Kalapana and Kalapana Gardens getting reclaimed once again, It is worth the trip. Lava is very easily viewable and at times spectacular as trees burn. It is a little emotional to see that area once again get covered. I was amazed that people would build there again but that is a testament to the power of the area.

There were multiple busloads of chattering tourists crammed into a really small viewing area pretty far from the flow, so we didn't stay long.
I really miss being able to just drive out to the end of the road and watch the sun go down over the mountain and see the flows emerge as night falls, in relative solitude and quiet. I know this is a big tourist draw and money maker for the tour companies, but for me the whole lava experience is fundamental to why I live here, and it is as close to church as I get, so the current experience reminds me of tour groups getting led through Chartres Cathedral while some people are trying to pray.

Carol my sentiments exactly the closest I can come to a genuine religious experience, so transforming to the spirit isn't it!

Pele was at work last night under the full moon. I feel sorry for Gary and his family. His house in Kalapana is now gone:

At least the lava has breached the horst and is once again flowing into the ocean. Might divert it from the remaining houses nearby:

Couldn't Gary move his house? I hope he had plenty of time to salvage anything valuable.

Are the homes that are on that Pali trapped now? Do they have a way out if she approaches?

Gary's house was the white structure being surrounded in the middle of this picture.
