Theravada Temple
#1

I did a few Google searches as well as the Punaweb search and only got hits on Oahu from Google. Does anyone know whether there are any groups or temples for the Theravada school on big island?

lquade: wood valley temple down in the kau that is nichiren.
Aloha Beejee, just to correct the above - Wood Valley is Tibetan Buddhist, Mahayana school, and there are opportunities for retreat stays:
"Retreats with visiting lamas of all four lineages of Tibetan Buddhism are conducted at the temple several times a year. These programs are on various aspects of Buddhist philosophy & meditation. Subjects cover all stages of practice in Buddhist Sutra and Tantra. From the important groundwork of correct motivation, altruistic thought to the relative and ultimate views of reality, the levels of practice vary according the person."

David: Thank you for the information, it's very much appreciated. I'm surprised there isn't a Theravada temple on Big Island given the Thai population here.

Eric: IMO, best to go, and ask questions later!! Smile

Cheers!!

The Hawaii American Buddhist movement is a little ..... American-ized... there was a very informative presentation at the Palace a while back that gave very good insight on the local movement.
ADD link for Aloha Buddha:

They are open to the public (we have gone to Puna Hongwanji)

Good website that has info on much of the island Buddhist centers:

This doesn't really answer your question, but there was an interesting article in the Hawaii Tribune Herald about the Hayagriva Dharma Center a couple days ago: http://hawaiitribune-herald.com/sections...enter.html

Here's the site for the Center; maybe they'll be able to help you?

Clearly I'm no expert, but in the meantime, I'm pretty sure lying on one's back eyes-closed on the lawn, sitting on a cliff eyes-open watching waves, taking a hike with one's wiggly Weimeraner, scuba-diving on a sunny day, and happily mopping one's cracked tlle floor are all marvelous/acceptable forms of meditation.

Not sure the name of the "school" though. ;

Wat Dhammavihara in Nanakuli/Waianae
(Mahanikaya )
and
Wat Buddhajakravararam in Pearl City
(Dhammautnikaya)

Monks from either of these Oahu Theravad temples travel ,
by invite , throughout Hawai'i .
They are regularly invited .
Efforts to establish a Thervad 'wat' or retreat center
here on the Big Island have never gelled .
The Thais are too busy working and don't make enough ngun .
