Good point DTisme. Dogs do leave them, and some worms are hard to find in a fecal float, (like whip worms), the method of detection vets use for finding most worms. It sounds like a very prudent measure considering most worms need different specific drugs to kill whtever worms they may carry. Also worms can be encapsulated and hatch later on long after a treatment. Some types of worming methods need more than one dosing. A pregnant bitch will release the encapsulated worms into her system and the pups get them before birth, even after worming before she gets pregnant. So that is why a vet will apways worm puppies. If people who don't pickup and throw in the trash the fecal waste in their yards, they will have a cycle of reinfection going on and it is not good to grow vegetables there or walk over those areas.
