speaking of farmers' markets: please support our friends cherie and jim who are growing hydroponic strawberries on their farm, "strawberry fields forever", in mountain view. on their first appearance at the volcano market this past sunday, they SOLD OUT of their sweet fruit.

I'm not sure why you are framing your argument using the assumption that healthy local food would taste "like its made from a pack of bird seeds and grass clippings" and imported processed food would automatically taste better. Your rhetoric sounds good, but just creates a straw man for you to knock down. Local healthy foods can taste just as good as some chemically preserved weeks old import from the mainland, in fact from my experience they can taste far better.
My favorite bakery on the planet is in Eugene, Oregon. Sweet Life specializes in vegan, organic, deserts made using healthy local ingredients and no artificial flavors or colors. They are out the door packed every Thanksgiving with people picking up holiday pies and desserts because they are soooooo outrageously good. They have also won the contest that is the "Olympics of chocolate" held in Paris, France, competing against top pastry chefs from all over the world, several times. Their vegan spelt marionberry muffins are healthy, use local ingredients, and are the best tasting muffins I've ever had.
I am an omnivorous former professional baker and total muffin snob, so the only reason I would eat one was because they taste good!

@Bob. Try Short and Sweet in Hilo... also the Krishnas at Maku'u on Sundays make yummy maple chocolate donuts...
@Carol. I guess it all comes down to what you (or Bob) thinks tastes good. I personally have never yet in my life eaten anything that was vegan AND spelt and felt the inclination to describe it as "good".......

I could relate to what Bob said.... I did not know hummus actually tasted good as I had only had it from one of our Puna health food stores. It was yucky.
SB made it at home with EEVO and garlic and salt and garbanzo beans (dont know what else but it was completely vegan) and it tasted awesome. We had it a now closed Greek restaurant in Kona and it was awesome. So i ventured back into the HF Store and still their hummus is yucky. I think it is the salt issue. Lots of salt is of course not good but a pinch of salt (local grown (!!) haha) is good.
Healthy food can taste good. It doesnt need to taste like you are eating a bird's nest, or thin set.
(Carol I know other places like you mentioned do manage to make healthy things taste good. What is with Puna health food stores?)
