They usually do interfere with each other. Or, utilizing all three might drain system resources and can slow down performance.

My computer guy mentioned that as an option too, I was just not comfortable giving all my data to a third party.

Safe mode and system restore, as was mentioned earlier, has worked for me several times throughout the years. I've definitely learned the incredible value of back up disks, RW so you can just update them, and external hard drives, which are also excellent and compact. I just took the hard drive from an old broken computer and got a case for it. Voila~ And don't mess around w/ free anti-virus programs if you're serious about not getting a bug. I'm on the same page w/ john about giving all my info to a third party... creeps me out.

BTW I got the System Tool rouge security product virus again, argh. Anyways I found out it only attaches its self to your personal settings. So if you restore your system make sure you install more than one user and you can go in thru the back door and still run your anti virus program. John's idea sound good about having more than one anti virus program. I have found however if you try to install the free Spybot it conflicts with other virus software and won't install. Remember to run your virus scan daily and stay clean and happy Smile

Running two different anti-virus programs and an anti-malware/anti-spyware program like John does may be the way to go if it works for you. Personally, I run a commercial anti-virus/anti-malware/anti-spyware program which I pay for. On top of that once a month or so I run the free versions of Malwarebytes and Spybot Search and Destroy as an added bit of protection. The commercial package I use is Zone Alarm Extreme Security but their Internet Security product is enough for most people. Their license is good for up to 3 PC's so when you buy it you can legally install it on up to 3 computers. The product takes very little memory and does not slow down my computer that I can tell except when it runs a scan of the hard drive. It catches about 95% of the viruses I have gotten (I don't get many to begin with). And on the occasion that other 5% gets thru I clean it off with Malwarebytes which is a GREAT program and/or Spybot. I pay $30/year for the Internet Security or $40/year for the Extreme Security products and that price covers all 3 of my PC's. For me that is the best protection for the price. I have tried the free programs: Avast and AVG and found that they are not all that effective. But combined with Malwarebytes that may just be a good combo. I have tried other commercial programs and have found the Zone Alarm product to work best for me. Also, Malwarebytes is worth the purchase price to get the full product as I use the full product in my business.

AVG seems to have kept me safe from that System Tool virus. In the past when I had Norton or MacAfee, they would not play well with any other virus protection. I even had several programs go wonky that suddenly started working right when I disabled Norton, hence my search for something else where I settled on AVG a few years ago.

Royal, if the hard drive is truly dead then there is little else to say.
Most people only live with one hard drive. I REALLY REALLY recommend you get a USB connected HD enclosure to stick another HD in or buy one of the ready made ones. Walmart has them.
I know this is Barn door advice, but this behavior has saved my PROGRAMS and DATA and my sanity several times over the last ten years.

You will after all keep using computers and it could save you next time, as well as having that drive accessible to any computer you use.
