The Good News: Hawaii does have a program for those who have been denied health insurance because of a pre-existing condition and the premiums seem reasonable.
The Bad News: the plan has VERY limited benefits. 2 hospital on BI - both on the OTHER side) and almost NO participating physicians.
You may qualify for this new health coverage option if you have been uninsured for at least six months, you have a pre-existing condition, and you have been denied coverage (or offered insurance without coverage of the pre-existing condition) by a private insurance company.
PCIP covers major-medical and prescription drug expenses. You're responsible for paying premium, deductible, copayments, and coinsurance amounts. PCIP won't cost you more just because of your medical condition. PCIP isn't based on income eligibility like Medicaid.
To qualify you must be a citizen or national of the United States or lawfully present in the United States.
You can check it out here:
https://www.pcip.gov/StatePlans.html
To see what hospitals participated and search for participating physicians, look here:
http://www.pciplan.com/providersearch/index.asp
The hospitals that I found that participate on the BI are:
North Hawaii Community Hospital
Kamuela, HI
Kailua-Kona Visiting Specialists
Kailua Kona, HI
A search for participating physicians was even more depressing. There were a few Family or Internal physicians on the BI. Almost NO specialists were listed on the BI.
I just found this info and I don't know any more details. Delve into it, and I suspect it isn't going to be a pretty (nor cheap or convenient) picture.
Please don't pee on my leg and then try telling me that it is raining.
