High cost of food in Hilo
#11
Once you organize a hui, you can get bulk deliveries from Azure Standard. They ship via boat to Hilo harbor where you have to organize someone with a truck or van to go get the load and take it to a distribution point. The items are paid for individually at Azure Standard's website, consolidated and shipped on pallets so the shipping rates are reasonable. Whoever picks up the order at the docks has to pay the entire shipping. Then whoever distributes the order collects the individual portion of shipping everyone owes. Each package has it's shipping weight and volume listed, so it's easy to figure out how much each person owes on shipping. There are several groups already ordering through Azure Standard, there may already be one in your neighborhood.

Hi HotzCatz,

I wanted to ask you - I usually order from Island Naturals store by the bulk. They have a catalog and you can order all dry goods for 1.5 points over the wholesale price, so i usually order my organic oatmeal or rice, ext in 25lb bags and it comes out pretty reasonable. they don't charge for shipping because my stuff that i order comes with their stuff for the store. i am wondering, have you done any bulk orders with IN and is it still cheaper to go with Azure Standard including paying for the shipping?
