According to the paper, yesterday the Council:
"Killed a bill that would have allowed a self-storage facility which would feed traffic onto a 55-mph highway in Puna. The facility was also panned by the Kim administration, which said it was an example of urban sprawl.
However, the controversial facility has proven to be a divisive issue among the new Coundil, with the vote falling along a developing 5-4 geographic split."

It looks like they have started. I came down 130 at lunch time and there are several acres cleared already!

Emily's not going to be happy ...... watch out !
I also see that even if the "Big Box" bill passes that the current Walmart would be grandfathered so thus could still be developed into a Super Walmart ( with approved plans)

Perhaps it would be a good time for some slow growth punatics to take a lead with Emily's efforts to do something for the families that are in need of affordable housing, directed especially at those that are of Hawaiian ancestry. By showing strong support for the issue that is dear to her, she might be won over as a strong advocate of the goals of those who advocate slow or tightly controlled growth and environmental and ecological protection. I don’t see any reason the two issues can't be complimentary.

A lot of us who opposed the 130 rezoning are not necessarily opposed to a storage facility per se. It was the apparent effort to circumvent the community development planning process and the existing General Plan that upset many. I personally think a well-designed storage facility at a location chosen as part of a comprehensive zoning plan could be a good thing for Puna.
Yes, a lot more needs to be done about affordable housing for ALL long-term Puna residents. Making efforts Hawaiian-centered might make Emily Naeole and some others happy, but would be unfair. Reform of the Hawaiian Homelands programs might be a better way to help Native Hawaiians, who have to wait a lifetime in some cases for help getting into homes on ancestral lands.
Just my opinion.

Jerry,
You are 100% correct on both your comments.
I second them.

There very well could be legal issues if any programs were appropriated by racial heritage. By directing efforts towards those in the appropriate social and economic category, without specifying race, you can still largely hit the target audience while also being somewhat inclusive. (It’s not like that method isn’t used) No doubt the Homelands Program needs work, but I was talking of a local effort. I was suggesting a peace offering to Emily in an effort to have the Puna commissioner as a partner and confidant rather than as a oppositionist to what may be goals of many Puna residents. It would be unusual for her to not feel some resentment resulting from the reaction to the position she took as a new commissioner.

While I have kind of led the initial opposition to the rezoning and am very pleased to find that the zoning has failed at council I have placed a call to the applicant to offer to help him find a location for the business that we can fully support. In the right location a self storage would be a community asset.
If at all possible I would prefer to see his dream succeed. Our opposition to the Hwy. 130 site was not personal or antibusiness - just anti bad planning.
Assume the best and ask questions.
