Hawaiian Air Price Fixing
#11
And Alaska airlines is capitalizing on it. They have over 10 "daily" non stops to the islands. Hawaiian better get their act together before Alaska starts competing in Hawaiian's inter-island market. Alaska's fleet of 737-700 and 737-800 planes would be perfect for inter-island flights.

From today's Tribune,This Day in History 1986,is an article about Mid Pacific Air and their popular $36.95 one way fare.

I ran that through an inflation calculator and came up with $76.33 in today's dollars.

Since Mid Pac went out of business because they couldn't make money at that fare,it seems reasonable for Hawaiian to charge what they do.

Yes, the issue isn't the cost of the airfare - as you noted it is close to the current cost of a 1986 inter-island ticket adjusted for inflation.

The problem is our wages have not grown to meet to gas, housing, and tax costs so there is less disposable income overall in 2011 than in 1986. And not many people delay purchase of their I-phone to fly inter-island instead if the choice had to be made between one or the other.

That said, HI Air is running a ton of specials right now from Hawaii to the mainland.
