Astro Talk at the University
#1
This Friday, March 16, the Univesity is going to have a really cool Astro Talk on the Northern Lights + it's free! The talk is in the UCB building - the building is just up from -west of- the main entrance. The write up I was sent is as follows:

"AstroTalk: The Majestic Northern Lights, 7:00pm, UCB 100. Public
talk by Jimmy Westlake of Colorado Mountain College. It is one of
nature’s most beautiful and awesome sights: green and crimson curtains
waving, flashing, dancing in the night. Powered by particles from the
Sun, shaped by the Earth’s magnetic field, and colored by the gases in
the upper atmosphere, the aurora borealis and australis have mystified
some of history’s greatest scientists. They are rarely seen south of
the Canadian border, but every eleven years, conditions exist that can
send the Northern Lights southward into mid-northern latitudes and even
into the Tropics. Come explore the colorful folklore and fascinating
science behind the majestic Northern Lights! Sponsored by UH Institute
for Astronomy and the Physics and Astronomy Department. For more
information, please visit astroday.net/AstroTalk38.html or call IfA
Outreach at 932-2328. Free and open to the public."

The free lecture is sponsored by UH Institute for Astronomy and the UH Hilo Physics and Astronomy Department. After the talk, if the sky is clear, the observatory on campus will be open for public viewing. For more information, please visit http://astroday.net/AstroTalk37.html or call IfA Outreach at 932-2328.

The University Astronomy Club is planning on having public viewing of the University Observatory on campus every friday at 7:00pm, except during the Astro Talk nights, when the viewing will follow the presentation.
